From the moment the two towns were founded, residents of Springfield and people living in Shelbyville have had trouble getting along.
It all goes back to the day Jebediah Springfield forced Shelbyville Manhattan out of his new settlement for suggesting inhabitants be allowed to marry their cousins. Since then, there has been constant pranking, taunting, and serious amounts of fighting whenever the local sports teams wage war.
Homer Simpson is a funny, entertaining guy. Before long, he was wanted in Capital City, allowing him to dance for sports fans all throughout, uh, whatever state Springfield is in. For all their faults, Homer and Marge Simpson have stayed together over 30 years with only a small number of major fights and arguments between them.
Instead, Marge went out with a more articulate, intelligent fellow, who had a downside in that he turned out to be all hands. They fight, and bite, and fight, and bite, and fight. Fight, fight, fight, bite, bite, bite. Enter cat, enter mouse, the two fight, cat usually dies in ridiculous fashion. The end. Unfortunately, producers being producers, network execs decide a new character was needed to the show so it could connect with kids, creating a dog to join the other animals in their antics.
Even with Homer providing the voice, the hound was a huge failure. A fling with a carnival worker even produced a son, also an older brother to Homer.
One of the greatest tools sitcoms have at their disposal is parody of popular film, and The Simpsons excelled in this area like so many others, particularly during Halloween season with the Treehouse of Horror specials. Heck, even the Comic Book Guy seems to have some level of adoration for the hero clad in red spandex, using nuclear based puns to fell his enemies into submission.
Unfortunately, the concept of shared ownership soon drives them all mad with envy. Being a kid who already loves committing real life violence, the allure of being able to do so in a world without repercussion is obviously overpowering for Bart Simpson. When a cool new game tells kids they should run up to their parents and demand they buy it for them immediately or go to hell, Bart takes up on that advice.
Unfortunately for him, Homer and Marge show rare signs of good parenting and decide the boy is violent enough already. Things get even worse when Bart takes matters into his own hands and gets caught trying to steal the game himself. Depending on how one feels about religion, it might just make perfect sense that most residents of Springfield are devout Christians.
That might be the problem, as Reverend Lovejoy is one of the least committed men of the cloth television has ever borne witness towards. After several years of questionable behavior, Mr. Burns forces Homer Simpson to take a psychiatric aptitude test for daring wear a pink shirt to work on day. Too lazy to fill out a quiz in his 30s, Homer hands the quiz over to Bart, inadvertently getting his dad locked up in a psychiatric facility.
Once it starts talking, though, Lisa gets furious at the implications, abandoning her false idol to create more progressive toys. Unsurprisingly, the business has a little trouble getting off the ground, until Homer takes pity on poor Ned and tells all his lefty friends about the store.
In fact, the Simpsons happened to live across the street from two Presidents during their time in Springfield, yet only one seemed to have a particular problem with them. Maybe he would have done better living near the Waltons. Throughout the majority of The Simpsons run, the most popular alcoholic beverage in Springfield is probably Duff beer. However, things change in a major way in the few short weeks after Homer shared his secret recipe for an incredibly alcoholic super drink, which Moe almost immediately steals and renames the Flaming Moe.
His commute to work takes forever, he can never find a parking space when he gets there, and the soda machine is always eating his change. Do they control the world somehow? They do, they do. Being a man of literally infinite means, billionaire nuclear power plant owner C.
Montgomery Burns is willing to do absolutely whatever it takes to defeat a rival in an employee softball game. Smithers does the footwork in finding some more modern baseball legends to help out, soon creating an All Star team featuring all but which name? Aside from cigarettes, the pastime the sisters love sharing the most involves watching their favorite TV show each and every week, something that almost costs Selma her life during her first murderous marriage.
Krusty only cares about more adult pursuits, like smoking, gambling, drinking, and having fun with his depressed pet monkey, Mr. All that said, even Krusty is moved when he sees how horrible the camp bearing his name is to the people who pay to stay there, so he decides to make it up to the kids in epic fashion. All right, this should be a pretty easy one.
